Erreka Medical studies new technologies for healthy aging

  • The Gipuzkoa-based cooperative, specialized in the manufacture of polymeric components for medical devices, is participating in the SENIOR project, which seeks to make a technological leap forward in the care and treatment of the elderly population.

The Basque Country is facing a demographic challenge: in 2036, almost a third of its population will be over 65 years old. This fact highlights the need to promote strategies that increase the quality of life of this population sector. In this context, a consortium of Basque companies has joined forces to develop the SENIOR project, an initiative that seeks to address the challenges of population aging through research and development of new medical technologies.

Erreka Medical, member of the MONDRAGON Health alliance and renowned for its experience in the manufacture of polymeric components for medical devices, joins the project to promote research into biomarkers, predictive models and biosensorics, with the aim of detecting and monitoring prevalent pathologies in the elderly, enabling personalized treatments to be established.

With a budget of 3.5 million euros and a duration that will run until December 2026, SENIOR will focus on three main therapeutic areas with high market demand: ophthalmology, mucocutaneous and neuromuscular. The aim is to develop diagnostic devices that enable early detection of warning signs and personalized medical devices for the treatment of pathologies in these areas. The initiative seeks to promote a technological leap in the care and treatment of the elderly, promoting healthy aging and a better quality of life.

The project, funded by the Basque Government through the Hazitek 2024 program, brings together leading companies from the Basque biomedical sector such as AJL Opthalmic (project leader), Histocell, Unikare Bioscience, Fesia Technology, IMG Pharma Biotech, Cocoon Bioscience and Certinalia. It also has the collaboration of Basque technology centers such as Tecnalia, Cidetec, Gaiker and Leartiker. This interdisciplinary collaboration will allow combining the expertise of different actors to achieve the ambitious objectives of the project.

Erreka Medical’s participation in SENIOR reinforces its commitment to innovation and the development of solutions that improve people’s quality of life. The cooperative thus contributes to progress in the field of health and positions itself as a key player in the development of medical technologies for healthy aging
